RVT Demands a Shelter Rent Tax Cut for Mitchell-Lama

Our affordable housing will not stay affordable to us on its own because a tax will not eliminate itself. We MUST get involved by contacting our elected representatives. Thanks to our fellow shareholder Loretta Johnson, River View Towers was present at the April 4, 2025 press conference to support the shelter rent tax cut for Mitchell-Lama developments.

“Shelter rent” tax is what Mitchell-Lama residents pay instead of New York City real estate tax. This is one of the major factors in keeping our Mitchell-Lama cooperative housing affordable.

Currently, shelter rent is only a 10% tax on the revenue of Mitchell-Lama developments. New legislation, Senate bill S5662 /Assembly bill A06654, seeks to eliminate the Mitchell-Lama shelter rent tax altogether. This will save River View Towers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, keeping it affordable for us.

THIS IS WHAT WE NEED TO DO: Ask our elected representatives New York State Senator Cordell Cleare and New York State Assemblymember Jordan J.G. Wright to support S5662/A06654 and tell them to fight for us because River View Towers needs their help.

When you email or call Senator Cleare and Assemblymember Wright always remember to include your full name and address with zip code in your email and also when you leave a voicemail or speak to someone in their office in person, so they know you are the vote that can keep them in office or replace them and that they represent you.
