The Primaries Are Here!

By: Brittny K.

Primary Election Day is fast approaching on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.  Polls are open from 6am to 9pm.  River View cooperators can vote across the street at Castle Gardens, located at 625 West 140th Street.  Busy that day?   Head on over to Storefront (formally Floridita Restaurant) at 2276 12 Avenue beginning June 15 through June 22 to vote early.

The Primary Election is almost more important for us than the November election.  Why? Because the Primary Election is where New Yorkers choose who they will get to vote for in the General Election in November. The Primary is where your vote makes a difference!  If you don’t vote in the Primary, then you are allowing other New Yorkers to choose who you will be able to vote for in November.  Don’t leave it up to someone else! **

**Make sure you are registered!  Since this is a primary election, only voters registered with a party may vote to nominate that party’s candidate.  The deadline to register so that you can vote in the primary is June 15, 2024.  You can register in person by going into your local board of elections office but, to be eligible to vote in the State and Local Primary, your application must be received no later than June 15, 2024. You can download an application to register here.

The top three issues for Presidential candidates across all parties are: affordable housing; crime; and immigration. It is our local elected officials in New York City and New York State who will direct how those issues impact our lives here at River View Towers. Be sure to research candidates and familiarize yourself with their platforms before you vote.  NYC Votes offers a good start to compare and contrast candidates, although their page needs to be updated. Ballotpedia is a decent resource for a quick and informative overview of what to expect in the upcoming elections in our area and beyond.

Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it, but your voice matters in how this city and country is run.  Politics is supposed to be for the people, so get out there and vote to reclaim your power.

New York State Assembly, 70th District. There are four candidates to choose from. Learn more about each of them under their names on this NYC Votes page and under Assembly District 70 in Ballotpedia. It is in this Primary Election on June 25, 2024 that we will choose which of these four people we will be able to vote for to replace our current Assembly Member Inez Dickens in November.

Primaries for New York State Senate District 30, U.S. House New York District 13 and U.S. Senate Class I have been canceled and the incumbents have advanced to the General Election in November.

  1. This is an excellent article. It is clear and provides lots of necessary information, some of which can be hard to track down online…and all in one place!

Please update this and run it again before each election. Thank you.
